Fordham Basketball's "Ram Town"!

Friday's "Ram Town" was awesome!

Fordham's atheletics department threw a huge celebration to kick off the basketball season.Thousands of students sporting maroon attire flooded the rose hill gym for a night packed with fun, entertainment, free give-a-ways and a lot of Ram pride!

I challenged my friend to an inflatable sumo wrestling competition and then celebrated my victory with the best Italian food in NYC, coming right from our very own Arthur Ave.

Students who had never before picked up a basketball competed in free-throw competitions and relay races on inflatable obstacle courses to win dozens of great prizes! Even though I only left with a few free t-shirts, posters and magnets, one of my friends won a free flat-screen TV! And a freshman girl even won a trip to Las Vegas!

In a nutshell: the night was "Ram-tastic!"

Fordham University's Student Culinary Council

Hello everyone! I am happy to announce that the Student Culinary Council is currently accepting applications to join our multiple committees! The Student Culinary Council (SCC), which is comprised of the Marketplace, Retail, Sustainability and Nutrition committees, is a group of students that works with Sodexo, Fordham's catering company, to plan menus, events and promotions, while always assisting them in achieving the highest level of Customer satisfaction.

In the past the Student Culinary Council has been responsible for:
-Planning and testing of new menu items
-Driving survey participation
-Establishing new retail brands
-On Campus mystery shopping

As Co-Chair of the "Marketplace," I am responsible for assisting my committee, which manages Fordham's main cafeteria "The Marketplace".

This year we are slated to assist Sodexo with all of the following events:

October 21st: SCC RAM SPIRIT DINNER

November 3rd: Cooking Class- Pasta
November 5th: Pizza
November 11th: Cooking Class- Homemade Doughnuts
November 15th: Roasting, Braising & Boiling (Employees & Students)
November 16th: Cooking Class- SCC Gets Stuffed (SCC & Faculty Family Dinner)
November 18th: Thanksgiving Dinner- Start of Christmas Season & SCC’s “Students Giving Back” Campaign
December 9th: Cooking Class- Truffles
December 15th: Make Your Own Gingerbread House & Midnight Breakfast
December 16th: Christmas Dinner

In addition to all of these events, we have weekly meetings to discuss the food served in The Marketplace, and we are constantly critiquing the menu to make sure students are satisfied when they dine in the cafeteria.

Students who are interested are encouraged to apply to any committee! If accepted, you will be added to Sodexo's payroll and earn $8.25/hr working for the SCC! We are not considered a club- this is a job! The SCC is a great way to get involved in on-campus life while earning some cash!

Home Sweet Home

The crisp smell of fresh paint. The aesthetically pleasing look of dark wood furniture. The surprisingly trendy accent wall of sea foam green. No, I'm not describing a new hotel. This is the mini photo shoot of my apartment in the new residence halls. A place of wonder and amazement, jaw dropping amenities, and a sense of "now this is what college living should be like." Granted, all of you who are reading this will not live in these dorms for at least another 3 years or so, but hey, it's something to look forward to.

Campbell 1 and 2, along with Salice and Conley are the new residence halls that opened on campus this year. Situated on the southwest side near the library and Martyr's Court, the 4 buildings are apartment style living with 4-6 people in each one. I myself live with 4 other girls. Did I mention we all have our own bedroom? 50% of the rooms in the buildings are singles and the rest are doubles. I have a collection of pictures here highlighting my apartment, but let me just say, each one is different. And now to the main event....

The living room is immediately in front of you when you enter. We added some extra chairs to accommodate all of us and spruced up the place with some festive pineapple place mats. Nothing says college like fruit decorations.

The kitchen is to your right as you walk in the front door and seems incredibly spacious thanks to the open floor plan. As you can see, we have the wonderful invention known as a dishwasher at our disposal. Mile high dishes in the sink are a thing of the past. Emptying the dishwasher is another story.

There are 2 bathrooms at either end of the apartment. Each side has one shower, a toilet, and 2 sinks outside of the actual bathroom. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that I can brush my teeth while my roommate showers.

Tada! My room. Small, but big enough to fit extra furniture in, as seen by the blue chair. A bookcase and an armoire are to the left, and a dresser is underneath the bed. Plenty of storage space for clothes. Sadly you can't see my posters of David Wright and David Boreanaz along with Emily Deshcanel of Bones fame on my wall. Just picture it though. They look great.

The rest of the rooms look much like mine. There is one long hallway with 2 rooms on the left side of the door, and the other 3 on the right. CSC (Campbell, Salice, Conley) is an amazing place to live and although you won't be here as a freshmen, these residence halls are definitely something to keep in mind later down the road. You still have programs run by Res Life and the RAs that are both fun and prepare you for life after but college, but you also have the feel of living out in the real world without actually moving off campus.

If you've watched ESPN in the past 6 months, you already know Brian Kownacki, a shortstop for the Fordham University baseball team who became a household name after scoring an unlikely run for his team.

Check out for yourself how Brian ended up with a nomination for an ESPN ESPY award for Best Play of the Year. (He ended up second in the popular vote to a Brett Favre game-winning touchdown pass!)

Only in New York....

It's a beautiful summer day in New York City and we cant help but remember one dreary March day not too long ago when U2 and Good Morning America took over the Rose Hill Campus for a morning that Fordham students will never forget.

Though we can't say things like this happen every year on campus, our wonderful location often allows for "drop-ins" of famous and influential folks who just happen to be in the area.

On Location // Solitary Man at Fordham

During my freshman year, film crews began appearing around campus. Once, when I had a free afternoon, I stood outside Thebaud Hall and watched Michael Douglas sit on a bench, pondering something while cameras recorded his pensive face and the backdrop of Fordham. I watched as they filmed Douglas watching a blonde girl stroll by Thebaud Hall, again and again. Another time, Susan Sarandon joined Douglas on the bench in front of Thebaud. Apparently the already picturesque gothic building did not quite meet Hollywood's standards--the ivy-strewn garden area wassupplemented by silk vines, stapled to nearby tree trunks and rails.

For the fall 2008 semester, it was common to stumble upon crews in the most unlikely places--in Martyr's Lawn, in front of the Walsh Library while I studied inside, on Edward's Parade or the steps of Freeman Hall. We knew little about the plot of the movie, Solitary Man (2009), but we knew Fordham would be recast in the movie as a small school near Boston. This wasn't unusual. Love Story (1970) and The Exorcist (1973) both filmed some scenes at Fordham, but it masqueraded as Harvard and Georgetown, respectively.

I finally saw Solitary Man a few weekends ago. After year of suspense, I was pleased to discover that Solitary Man was an excellent film with great acting. In addition to Douglas, Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito, Mary-Louise Parker, Jenna Fischer and Jesse Eisenberg all gave stellar performances. The film centered around Douglas' character, a once-famous car dealer whose life crumbles around him. Though his character is unlikable, he plays his part wonderfully, and the film is enjoyable. Also, about a third of the film took place on Fordham's campus; it was fun to see movie stars walking the same paths I take on my way to class.
